Sections of what would become the Canadian Pacific Railway had begun to be built across Canada in the 1870s, but the transcontinental line that would link British Columbia to New Brunswick would not be completed until almost twenty years later. The work of spanning the continent was accomplished by a combination of construction and buying out of shorter lines. Although much of the literature has focused on the building of the line in the West, the Canadian Pacific was extended across Maine to the Maritimes by a "Short Line".
